Sessile drops in weightlessness: an ideal playground for challenging Young’s equation

چکیده

Abstract Sessile drop creation in weightlessness is critical for designing scientific instruments space applications and manipulating organic or biological liquids, such as whole human blood DNA drops. It requires perfect control of injection, spreading, wetting; however, the simple act creating a on substrate more complex than it appears. A new macroscopic model derived to better understand this related behavior. We find that, given set substrate, liquid, surrounding gas properties, when ratio surface free energies contact line energy scale, angle can vary at static equilibrium over broad volume range. increase decrease against depending sign up an asymptotic value. Consequently, our aims explore configurations that challenge faithful representativity classical Young’s equation extends present understanding wetting.

Four - phase merging in sessile compound drops

We consider the statics of compound droplets made of two immiscible fluids on a rigid substrate, in the limit when gravity is dominated by capillarity. In particular, we show that the merging of four phases along a single contact line is a persistent and robust phenomenon from a mechanical and thermodynamic perspective; it can and does occur for a range of interfacial energies and droplet volum...

Relaxation of nonspherical sessile drops towards equilibrium.

We present a theoretical study related to a recent experiment on the coalescence of sessile drops. The study deals with the kinetics of relaxation towards equilibrium, under the action of surface tension, of a spheroidal drop on a flat surface. For such a nonspherical drop under partial wetting conditions, the dynamic contact angle varies along the contact line. We propose a new nonlocal approa...

Sessile and Pendant Micro-Liter Drops Evaporate at Different Rates: An Experimental Approach

Evaporation of micro-liter drops from solid surfaces at room condition is mainly governed by diffusion. Therefore, there should be no difference between evaporation rate of sessile and pendant drops. However, some studies indicate a difference and explain the difference using buoyancy. The objective here is to reconcile the inconsistency in the literature. For that, first, by comparing two iden...

Quasistatic relaxation of arbitrarily shaped sessile drops.

We study a spontaneous relaxation dynamics of arbitrarily shaped liquid drops on solid surfaces in the partial wetting regime. It is assumed that the energy dissipated near the contact line is much larger than that in the bulk of the fluid. We have shown rigorously in the case of quasi-static relaxation using the standard mechanical description of dissipative system dynamics that the introducti...

On Modeling Evaporation of Sessile Drops

Evaporating drops and thin films have numerous applications, from nanometric photoresist films in semiconductor applications to small sessile drops used for analysis of DNA microarrays [1]. Evaporating sessile drops are particularly interesting due to nonuniform drop thickness and the presence of contact lines (separating liquid, gas and solid phase). These factors may lead to nonuniform evapor...
